Australian troops were still in Belgium when the Germans launched their Spring Offensive in March 1918, breaking three years of stalemate on the Western Front. Rushed south to defend the strategically vital city of Amiens, Australian troops of the 13th and 15th Brigades made a highly successful night-time bayonet assault on the town of Villers-Bretonneux on the night of 24 April 1918. Recapturing the town this action marked the end of the German offensive and led to further allied victories in the following months.
